Meet Doug Stoner Candidate for Smyrna City Council Ward 6 Doug Stoner is dedicated to improving the quality of life for his hometown of Smyrna. Doug is a lifelong Cobb County resident and graduated from Campbell High School and Kennesaw State University. He developed his roots as a businessman as a third-generation Cobb County business owner, operating the family business that includes operating commercial properties and a chain of Dairy Queen restaurants in Metro Atlanta. He has been serving the community for the past 20 years. From 1999-2002, he served as Chairman of the Cobb Transit Board. From 2001-2002, he was President of the King Springs Elementary PTA. Since 1991, Doug has served as the Vice-Chairman of the Smyrna Downtown Development Authority. He also currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the South Cobb Redevelopment Authority. Doug served one term in the Georgia House of Representatives during 2002-2004. In 2004, Doug was elected to the State Senate to represent Georgia’s 6th District, which includes portions of Cobb and Fulton Counties. He was re-elected by his constituents in 2006, 2008 and 2010. He was listed among the “Most Influential Georgians of the Year” by James magazine in 2010. Doug finished his service in the Senate in 2012. Doug and his wife, Della, currently reside in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Smyrna and we they are raising their two daughters, Gray and Honor. Stay in Touch Sign up to receive emails. VOTER INFO Issues PreviousNext 1234 Strengthening Our Schools If elected, I will immediately push to establish a permanent Education Committee on the City Council to make education a priority. We should consider having the City Council create the committee that is comprised of a Chair and two to three council members plus potentially Cobb School Board Members and administrators from schools within the city limits. The Education Committee will hold regular meetings with Cobb County School Board to discuss and take appropriate action on ways to improve the quality of education provided to our children such as: Keep schools safe by increasing coordination with local police and fire departments. Partner with local businesses to fund after-school programs for all students. Create internship programs with city departments and local businesses for students to see how their education comes to life. Create a study hall within the Smyrna Library to increase student study time. Partner with local businesses to fund one on one tutoring. Keeping Smyrna Moving: Easing Traffic It is no secret that the Atlanta Braves will soon be our new neighbors. I have heard from many of you that the resulting game day traffic will be a challenge that we must all face. Fortunately, the City of Smyrna has been installing a new synchronized traffic management system which will be operational by early next year at all 53 intersections in the City of Smyrna. This will allow the city to adjust the flow of traffic based on real time data not just on game days but every day of the year. Smyrna is also working in coordination with Cobb County and Georgia DOT to develop traffic management plans for Braves game days. You may check out current and future transportation projects in the City of Smyrna at Also new growth and development is now occurring in Smyrna, which of course brings additional traffic year round, not just on game day. That is why, as your councilmember, I will push for a new comprehensive transportation study, so that the city and its citizens can review, develop and implement forward-looking transportation solutions to accommodate current and future growth. In the short term, here are some ideas to keep Smyrna moving. Focus our initial efforts on easing gridlock on Atlanta Road and Spring Road, as they will be major thoroughfares when the Braves arrive. We need to ensure that the new synchronized traffic management system currently being installed will be operational by early next year at all 53 intersections in the City of Smyrna. Install traffic calming structures on our neighborhood streets to reduce speeds and keep our children and residents safe. Engage with Cobb Community Transit and the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority to seek new Commuter Express routes from Smyrna to the major employment centers around the Metro Atlanta area. Protecting our Neighborhoods by Ensuring Quality Growth Smyrna has become one of the most desirable places for people to live in the Metro Atlanta area. And for good reason – with effective schools and proximity to major attractions Smyrna is a great place to call home. However, with so many people desiring to relocate to Smyrna there will be a greater demand placed on our infrastructure and there will be those who would like to take shortcuts with construction projects. Accordingly, we must take steps to ensure that we grow in a manner that welcomes new citizens, but preserves those qualities that make Smyrna great. We must ensure that our neighborhoods are protected from over-development that harms our quality of life. When analyzing quality growth opportunities, we must also factor in the impact upon existing resources by holding a series of town halls to gain as much public input as possible. Make sure developers who are working within our city are living up to responsibilities by having them provide infrastructure to Smyrna neighborhoods by making them comply with city ordinances and construction codes. Ensuring that our Community Development Department has the resources they need to effectively and efficiently manage our growth. I welcome your input. I don’t have all of the answers. If you have an idea for how to make our city great, please contact me. I pledge to you that I will always make time to listen to your ideas on how we can make our city great.
